Coursework preliminary exercise

 1) Write a 100 word statement of intent explaining what you are going to make for your preliminary exercise.

I plan to make a 30 second  music video about a young adult struggling to afford school equipment and struggling to pay rent for him and his family, which includes him and his mum. The first montage of the editing sequence is that their will be a soundtrack that fits the negative mood .My character will not be in school uniform so his struggles are deliberately shown and we can see how he is struggling with money in this generation.

The middle of the music video will show my character meeting up with his friends and getting to know how he feels safe and what they get up to in this generation .Throughout the soundtrack my character will be singing out of his true emotion and the story behind who he really is and how his financial issues are making him struggle.

2) Write a script for your preliminary exercise on your blog. This needs to include stage directions AND dialogue. To see how a TV drama script is presented, and to look at professional examples, check out the BBC Writers' Room and click on Script Library. These will not be music video scripts but the layout will be the same

The script will be of him getting chased down and show what happens when your on the wrong estate.


3) Casting: Who will be in your preliminary exercise music video?

4) Plan your locations: Where you will film your preliminary exercise? (You can film off-site if you wish to do this for homework - this is what we would strongly recommend). Important note: You CANNOT take any students out of any other lessons OR disturb any other lessons in the school. If you wish to film in-school then you will need to film with Mr Ray supervising or after school with a Media teacher present.

5) Write your shot list: every shot you plan to film. This needs to be far MORE shots than you will actually use in the final edited version - plan extra angles, close-ups, long shots and more. You can find an example shot list here. This is for a narrative film but the layout will be the same.

His Dark Materials: Language and Representation blog tasks

  Language and close-textual analysis 1) Write an analysis of the episode - using  your notes from the screening in class .  Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, editing, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.) You can currently  watch His Dark Materials on BBC iPlayer here . Camerawork, editing and sound:  To start off the episode they utilise epic non diegetic music (meaning the characters can't hear the music) to set the atmosphere for the rest of the opening scene and the rest of the episode. They also use an establishing shot of the "city in the sky" in order to hook the audience and communicate that it will have heavy fantasy themes.
